5TH GRADE RELIGION CURRICULUM
This curriculum is designed to give you an idea of the types of things that are being taught in our religion class. It is not intended to be a syllabus and does not begin to cover everything that is taught over the course of the school year. 2. The Seven Sacraments
Baptism
discuss the purpose of Baptism, the symbolism of water and its effect on them
Reconciliation
explore the meaning of sin
participate in reconciliation and be able to express its value in our lives
Eucharist
discuss and participate in the Eucharist and be able to explain its purpose in our lives
recognize our responsibility to participate actively in the Eucharist
connect the experience of gathering for important events to celebrating the Eucharist.
relate our physical need for food to our spiritual need for the Eucharist
recognize that Jesus is truly present in the consecrated bread and wine of the Eucharist
Confirmation
support Confirmation by sending cards and prayers to the people being confirmed
Matrimony
discuss Matrimony and its effect on their family
Holy Orders
pray for our priests and religious leaders
Sacrament of the Sick
pray for the sick of our world
compare and contrast the sacraments of Reconciliation and Sacrament of the Sick
discuss the sacrament and its purpose
Scripture (including the
particular way that we use and interpret the scriptures = Tradition)
demonstrate the proper method used to locate specific verses in the bible
realize that the Old Testament and the New Testament are both God's living word
memorize and discuss the meaning of a few quotes in the bible
Tradition
how we use scripture; decisions made not exclusively from scripture
discover why scripture is important in the celebration of the sacraments
understand the introductory rites and the liturgy of the word
discover how to prepare for Mass
observe Lenten traditions
Culture
research saints, dress up as one and give a speech for other classes
give examples of the cardinal virtues in saints and others
discuss roles of priests and deacons
recognize that we are all called to be saints
demonstrate how to honor the saints
identify different liturgical roles
describe customs and traditions regarding Advent wreaths
Prayer and Devotions – The learner will:
Liturgical (worship)
discover the role of the gathering song in liturgy
prepare masses and discuss readings
participate in masses and Eucharist
investigate the parts of the mass
Communal- The learner will:
pray the rosary and understand the various mysteries
pray the Stations of the Cross
pray the act of contrition
participation in Eucharistic Adoration
daily pray the Angelus
compose and pray daily petitions
learn how to lead the rosary
lead the prayer before meals
recite stewardship prayer
generate spontaneous prayer
participate in the May Procession
recite various prayers, such as, the Hail Mary, Our Father, and Sign of the Cross
explore the Acts of Faith, Hope, and Love
Private- The learner will:
pray the rosary and understand the various mysteries
pray the act of contrition
offer daily petitions
prayer before meals
be encouraged to pray privately at home and with their family
Christian Service
bag groceries for the Big Stef Organization and understand the reason for this service
take care of the school garden that provides produce for the needy
recognize that all of us have challenges and strive to help others overcome them
recognize hospitality as a ministry and demonstrate it with classmates, teachers and community members
utilize the cardinal virtues in service to others
Doctrine and their
implications
identify ways the Holy Spirit works in our lives
discuss the trinity and 3 persons in one
Vocation – The learner will:
be able to identify various vocations that are available to them and others
give examples of God's call to use one's gifts to serve others
compare and contrast Matrimony and Holy Orders as sacraments of service
Family Life - The learner will:
understand more about their own family and Church family
learn about their moods and those of each family members and how they affect the family
learn the importance of honesty and respect in good communication
understand the changes that occur during puberty
list reproductive parts of the body and their function
understand their responsibilities regarding their own physical development and how it relates to the opposite sex.
