SERVICE HOME

As Catholics, there is no more important duty than to do service for those in our community who are less fortunate than ourselves. At St. Catherine, we teach our students from kindergarten to eighth grade what service is, why we do it and how to create and participate in service projects. Below is a summary of how service is dealt with across the grades and information to help our students and parents fulfill their call to do God's work.

Grades K-2

In grades K-2, the idea of service is introduced. Students learn about the faith and the meaning of service. Through monthly stewardship activities, they are given the opportunity to discuss with their classmates the way they have shared their time and talent with others. Individual classes also do teacher generated group service projects that are usually based on a partnership within the parish or local community.

Grades 3 and 4

In grades 3-4, students continue to broaden their understanding of service and become more aware of the specific needs in our community. Teacher, as well as student, generated projects allow students to learn what is involved in organizing and then implementing activities.

Grades 5-8

As our students grow and near the time they will receive their Confirmation, more of the responsibilities involved in doing service falls on them.  All students in grades 5-8 are required to complete a specific amount of service hours during the school year, dependent upon grade level.  Since we are members of different communities, service hours can be done within social organizations, parishes, or school.
