Junior High Survival Guide

Junior high school is a time of transition as young women and men leave the safety and security of elementary school and prepare for the independence and challenges of high school. To help with this, we would like to give you some information that will help you be successful this year.

Class Changes - While students did some class changes in 4th and5th grade, these were limited. In junior high, students will be asked to change class each period of the day. Schedules will be given out at the beginning of the year showing which class and teacher they have for each period. Students will be expected to be prepared for each class and have the appropriate books and other materials with them. No one will be allowed to return to their homeroom during class. In some cases, students may be able to go their lockers if the teacher allows it.

Organization - Each student will be asked to purchase a 12 pocket portfolio to help with organizing the many papers you will have throughout the year. The pockets should include all of your classes and any additional subjects or areas as stated by the teachers. Portfolios should be used for papers that are needed in a subject and should not contain tests or other papers that have been returned to you. Keeping an organized portfolio will help save time and make sure you have what is needed. In addition to the pocket portfolio, students are expected to use their agenda daily. Students should write in the agenda each period then use this information to make sure that you have everything for homework that evening.

Homework -  All students are expected to do their homework every night. Homework is vital to show understanding of concepts that were taught that day. Students should develop a consistent homework process at home that allows them to do their best and complete all required assignments. Parents are encouraged to check their child's homework and agenda each night to ensure that it is done properly and to be active in their child's education. Homework Policy

Attitude - Junior high is an exciting time for students and many other things can become a distraction at school. It is important that students understand that the purpose of school is to learn. There will be plenty of time for social interaction but students need to focus on their work while in class. Students are expected to work hard in school and do their best to prepare themselves for high school. Developing a good work habit in junior high is a key ingredient in future success.

Discipline - Students are expected to set positive examples for younger students. Manners and respect are always expected. No actions that disrupt the educational process will be acceptable in any way. As young adults, students will help create classroom discipline policies that will allow for optimum learning while still creating an enjoyable experience. Click here to view Discipline Policy.

Communication - Communication is very important in the success of junior high students. Teachers, parents and students need to work together to make sure that everyone is actively involved in the education process. Teachers will be expected to communicate regularly with students and parents with their expectations. Students are encouraged to participate in class and to talk to the teacher if they have concerns. Parents should work with their child and his/her teachers to ensure that he/she is doing well and is happy at school. Any problems or concerns should be shared with the teacher so that everyone is one the same page.
