The information on this website was created by the Inclusive Education Committee of the Diocese of Covington. The purpose of the committee is to create a comprehensive approach to how schools deal with students who have disabilities that hinder the quality of their education. Our hopes are that all students in the Diocese will be given the attention they need to be successful in our schools.
The next meeting of the Diocesan Inclusive Education Committee will be held @ Villa Madonna's gym conference room on Tuesday the 28th.
The doors open around 7:30 and the meeting begins at 8:00. We try to end by 9:00 if possible
THE PROCESS
The following is a sequential process that will be used to identify students who struggle academically and introduce interventions to help them succeed.
Step 1. Teacher recognizes a student with learning difficulties and shares his/her concerns with administrator/special education coordinator/counselor.
Step 2. Teacher attempts various interventions from the Intervention Checklist. Parents should work with the classroom teacher to help give feedback on an intervention. At this point, any interventions are temporary.
Step 3. If the interventions that have been tried are not working, the teacher should contact the school administrator to begin an Intervention Referral. At this time, the school administrator may recommend other interventions from the list of Recommended Intervention or begin the formal referral process.
Step 4. If the administrator decides to begin the formal referral process, an intervention meeting is set up with the parents using the Notification of Parent Meeting form (This is a sample that each school may change as they see fit).
Step 5. The Intervention Meeting will be used to share all pertinent information with the parents and make a determination on the next step (i.e. pursuing state testing and/or ongoing intervention plans). The Intervention Meeting Summary is to be completed at this time.
Step 6: Based on the information attained in the Intervention Meeting, the Public Special Education Referral process may begin and/or a temporary Alternative Learning Plan (ALP) will be created. This plan will be in place to provide interventions during the Public Referral Process. The temporary ALP will either be terminated in lieu of an IEP from the county or become permanent if the referred child does not qualify for special ed services.
Step 7: When a student is promoted from one grade to another or goes to another school, a meeting should take place between the current and future teachers. The Transition Form should be used as documentation for this meeting.
