 IN OUR PARISH

THANK YOU    “No matter where we go or what the situation, Nancy and I can count on our parish community’s prayers.  These last eight months I think we wore out your knees, but I know how thankful I am to call St. Catherine’s my home parish.  You all certainly know how to pray.  God bless you all.”  Chuck Miller.

PARISH CENSUS   Door-to-door census takers needed!  The second phase of a census of the entire Diocese of Covington will begin in Campbell and Kenton Counties and will begin on Census Sundays, October 16 and October 23 with follow up through the week. We will need 80 -100 volunteers to visit families within the parish boundaries (they will go in pairs).  Training will be provided for these volunteers.  Your help is needed to make this project a success! Please call Ann Ulbricht at 441-8159 to sign up as a volunteer.

SUMMER FESTIVAL 2012     There will be a festival meeting on Tuesday, September 6th at 7:30 p.m. in the meeting room next to the library.  Everyone is welcome to attend this brainstorming session for next year’s festival.  We want to make our festival bigger and better than ever, but we need your input!  Join us as we begin plans for an amazing 2012 festival.

WHAT IS RCIA?   The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA) is the sacramental formation process that prepares a person to become a member of the Roman Catholic Church.  Conversion is at the heart of the process.  The initiation of new members can only take place within the context of a community of believers.  The initiation of adults is the responsibility of all the baptized.    How Can Parish Members Become Involved in the RCIA Process?  One of the most essential parts of the formation process is the identification of candidates.  This is one instance where members of our faith community play a vital role.  Is there someone in your life who has expressed an interest in knowing more about our faith?  Do you have a spouse, neighbor, co-worker, or anyone who has spoken with you about this subject?  Ninety percent of our candidates come from referrals of parish members.  If you have someone in your life that would like to consider the possibility of becoming a Catholic, please call or have the potential candidate call the parish office (441-1352), or Paul Meisenhelder (491-9455).  The date for classes to begin is Thursday, September 8th, at 7:00 p.m. in the room next to the school library.  Please reach out to potential candidates and encourage them to make the call or volunteer to do so for them.

Save the DATE    The St. Catherine's Men's Group will be hosting the 5th Annual Cornhole, Euchre & Sports Game viewing on the Big Wall Event, Saturday, September 10th from 6:30 PM - 11:30 PM in the Parish Center - Gym.  This event is for all adults 21 or older (not just for men).  Come join us for an exciting night of cornhole, euchre and sports game viewing.  There are several exciting college football games scheduled for that night that will be viewed.  Unfortunately, the Reds play in the afternoon and the game isn't on TV. Reservations strongly suggested.  Contact Rob Hans at 441-5430 or rlhans@fuse.net to register your cornhole team and/or to signup for euchre.

UPCOMING SPEAKER    Wayne Weible has spoken about the alleged apparitions of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Medjugorje on the Oprah Winfrey Show and Mother Angelica and will now speak at St. Catherine Parish on Sunday, September 11th at 7:00 pm!  For 25 years he has lectured on the phenomenon of Medjugorje, and has authored 8 books, including “Miracle at Medjugorje” which has sold over 100 million copies world-wide.  Come hear about the fascinating miracles of the “Queen of Peace” that led him to convert to the Catholic faith.   No tickets required, love-offering will be taken. Questions call 441-3438 or 441-1069.

PARISH FEST 2011   will be held on Sunday, September 25th from 4:00 p.m. - 7:30 p.m. Grilled items, smoked pork and beverages will be provided, just bring a side dish to share.  There will be games, fun and music for all ages, so be sure to come and share an evening with your fellow parishioners!

DIOCESAN OBSERVANCE OF THE ANNIVERSARY OF SEPTEMBER 11TH, 2001      Bishop Foys invites all people of the diocese to join him as he presides at solemn Vespers on Sunday, September 11th at 3:00 p.m. at the Cathedral Basilica in observance of the 10th anniversary of the terrorist attacks on our country.  Local government officials along with police, fire and emergency personnel will also be present.

VOLUNTEER TUTORS NEEDED    Notre Dame Urban Education Center (NDUEC) is seeking volunteers who wish to help provide educational support services to young children in Covington.  Tutors, as well as art and P.E. monitors are greatly needed.  NDUEC will open for the fall program on September 19th.  If you have a couple hours a week to assist a child in developing their talents, call Mary Gray at 261-4487 or email at nduecvolunteer@sndky.org.

SAFE ENVIRONMENT (VIRTUS)    Please be aware that if you wish to participate in parish and school activities that involve the presence of children, you need to be trained and in compliance with the safe environment program in the Diocese.  If you haven’t registered for this program but would like to volunteer for school and/or parish events, please contact the parish office.  If you are already participating in the program, be sure to keep up with your monthly bulletins.

DOMESTIC NEEDS COMBINED    Blessed Teresa of Calcutta once said, “I want you to be concerned about your next door neighbor.  Do you know your next door neighbor?”  Did you know that forty million Americans live in poverty?  Did you know that 45 percent of all Arch/Dioceses in the United States are unable to provide ministries to their people without outside assistance?  Did you know that of the 1900 plus students at Thomas More College, over 90 percent qualify for financial aid?  This collection supports the work of six separate Catholic appeals whose combined ministries offer financial aid to college students, provide job training for men and women trying to break free from the cycle of poverty, keep church doors open in remote areas where Catholic institutions are few in number, offer evangelization programs in African and Native American communities, and bring the Good News to TV, radio and newspaper audiences.  Please give to the Diocesan Domestic Needs Collection.  Your prayers and generosity will help your brothers and sisters throughout the United States.  Remember your one gift supports six collections.

IMPLEMENTATION PLAN FOR THE UPCOMING CHANGE IN THE ROMAN MISSAL   Each week there will be an article relating to the upcoming changes in the Roman Missal.  (Some of them may be run more than once and they may not follow the Order of Mass.

The Collect

“In everything by prayer and supplication let your requests be made known to

God” (Philippians 4:6). What is the Collect? The origin of the term refers to the prayer

made by the people “collected together in one place” and to the “collecting up” of the

petitions of the many into one single prayer. The Collect concludes the Introductory

Rites of the Mass.

The Collect is made up of four elements. (1) The priest, by saying, “Let us pray,”

invites the faithful to make their petitions to God in a silent supplication. (2) The faithful

respond by praying in silence. (3) The priest collects the prayers of the many into a

single solemn prayer and presents it to God through Christ. (4) The faithful respond

“Amen,” placing the seal of their assent on the prayer offered by the priest.

Read the Collect of today’s Mass and take it to heart. It will teach you how to call

upon God, remind you of what his power has done in the past, teach you to ask wisely for

his grace in the present, and invest your prayer with the joyous assurance that comes from

going to God “through Christ our Lord.”
