UPCOMING
PRAISE AND WORSHIP SPEAKER Do
you believe in modern-day miracles? Deacon Jack Sullivan of Boston does
because he was healed on August 15, 2001 from a crippling spinal disorder
through the intercession of Cardinal Newman. This miraculous healing led to the
beautification of Cardinal Newman on September 19, 2010. Deacon Jack will tell
the story of this amazing miracle next Sunday, October 16th,
7:00PM @ St. Catherine of Siena church in Ft. Thomas, KY. He will follow the
talk with a healing service and a blessing with Newman’s relic. No tickets
needed, a free-will offering will be taken. For details call 441-3438.
WAYNE
WEIBLE’S TALK ON CD CD’s
from the talk given on September 11th on Medjugorje are now available
for sale in the parish office. Cost
is $5.00.
OPPORTUNITY
TO HELP OTHERS Our parish
members, Julie DuPont, Mary Scott, Karen Little, and Teena Devoto are
partnering with Welcome House of Northern Kentucky in a project called “The
Garden Shoppe”. They really need your help in making this project a
huge success! They are opening a store on Oct 4th
to benefit single-parent, lower income families who live at the Gardens at
Greenup Apartments in Covington. This housing complex is a
Welcome House affordable housing initiative with on-site support services
including intensive case management and licensed quality childcare. The program
works with families to set and achieve educational and vocational goals in
working toward sustainable income. They
are looking for personal care items, cleaning supplies, home goods, clothing,
shoes, toys, books and other miscellaneous items. Your new or gently-used
individual donations can be delivered to one of them, or pick up is available
upon request. They will gladly support your effort to organize a donation drive
at your school, through the church or work. In addition, your assistance with
connections to gain financial donations is also greatly needed and very much
appreciated. All donors will be provided with a donation receipt for tax
purposes. For additional information, please contact Julie DuPont at jdupont9@insightbb.com or 859-653-3336.
PRAYER
BLANKET MINISTRY provides
hand-made blankets as well as prayers to parishioners who are in the hospital
and/or ill for an extended time. If
you would like to make a blanket, donate material or make a financial donation
to this ministry, please contact Nancy Hassman at (859) 760-3751 or nhassman@fuse.net.
Save
the Date St.
Catherine Parish Women's Retreat will be held Feb
24-26, 2012 at Marydale. The Retreat Director will be Fr. Greg Bach and the
theme of the weekend is "Christ Be Our Light". More info to
follow.... We'll see you there!
SCRIP PROGRAM
ADDITIONS There
are a few new additions to our Scrip Program.
We are now able to order gift cards for Groupon, Shutterfly and Whole
Foods. Remember to utilize
this program for your everyday shopping needs for groceries, gas, household
items, clothes, etc., as well as for gift-giving.
We earn money for the parish from every purchase you make.
PRO-LIFE
October is Respect Life Month. Bishop
Foys has asked all parishes to participate in soliciting names for a multi-page
newspaper ad that will appear in January 2012 to mark the infamous Roe vs. Wade
Supreme Court decision that made abortion legal in the U.S.
Sign up will be every remaining weekend in October after all masses.
Suggested donation is $2.00 per name.
THANK YOU FROM THE
BISHOP “Dear Fr.
Bankemper and parishioners of St. Catherine of Siena:
I want to take this opportunity to offer my sincere thanks and
appreciation once again for exceeding your parish goal for the 2011 DPAA!
Your generosity to the Appeal demonstrates your trust in God and our
service to the mission of proclaiming and bearing witness to Christ’s kingdom.
I am deeply grateful for your amazing generosity each year in support of
the DPAA. Thank you for your witness
of faith and charity! As we so often
pray for the coming of the kingdom, we also recognize the mission we have
received from Jesus to proclaim His kingdom here in the Diocese of Covington and
throughout the world. Through your
efforts, you have allowed Christ’s teachings to live in our hearts and to
spread throughout our faith community…….May the blessings of our Lord Jesus
Christ continue to be with you and your ministry.”
Yours fraternally in the Lord, Most Reverend Roger J. Foys, D.D.
YOUTH 2000 IS COMING SOON!
The
annual diocesan retreat will be held October
28th - 30th at Notre Dame Academy.
This is the 7th annual Eucharistic retreat for young men and
women of the diocese, featuring the Franciscan Friars of the Renewal. The
weekend is packed with great live music, dynamic talks, reverent prayer, and
real fun! You can make it possible
for your teen to draw closer to Christ and get excited about being Catholic.
Full details and registration forms can be found at www.nkyouth.com.
This is not an overnight and minors must have a chaperone.
One VIRTUS-certified adult can take up to seven minors.
Two adults may register as co-chaperones, splitting hours/cost.
If you can help chaperone some of our parish teens, or if your child is
in need of a chaperone, please contact Teresa at 441-1352 or 781-8453.
IMPLEMENTATION
The
Homily
“Preach the
word in season and out of season, convince, rebuke, and exhort, be
unfailing
in patience and in teaching” (2 Timothy 4:2). The homily is an integral part
of
the
Mass, reserved to priest celebrant himself, or entrusted by him “to a
concelebrating
priest
or occasionally, according to circumstances to a deacon, but never to a lay
person”
(GIRM,
art. 65). The homily may be an explanation of the Gospel, of the other Mass
readings,
or of the responsorial Psalm. It may call attention to other texts of the Mass
or
develop
the feast or mystery being celebrated on a given day. The homily is “the Word
in
other words.”
The best
preaching is prepared in silence. Before preaching the Word, the priest
listens
to it, repeats it, and allows it to germinate in his heart. The homily is a
bridge in
two
ways. It connects the first part of the Mass, the Liturgy of the Word, to the
second
part,
the Liturgy of the Eucharist; and it connects the Mass to the rest of life. The
homily
sends
God’s people, full of thanksgiving, into the Sacrifice of Christ renewed on
the altar,
and
prepares them to go forth into a world hungry for goodness, beauty, and truth.
