 IN OUR PARISH

FROM THE PASTOR   There are major feasts in the Church’s liturgical calendar - Christmas, Easter, Christ the King, the Feast of All Souls - but there are also many minor feasts as well, such as optional remembrances of saints - called optional memorials - and the smaller feasts of the Blessed Mother, such as the feasts of the Birth of Mary or Our Lady of Sorrows.  There is no way to celebrate all of the minor feasts in the calendar, but the Church never intended everyone to celebrate all feasts.  They are there to satisfy a local need or a private devotion, or to offer opportunities for opening ourselves to new devotions.  Sometimes a minor feast is celebrated only in one part of the world, or by only one group of people, such as a religious order.  Sometimes a larger, less homogeneous group, such as a large parish, may have small groups within it, or even individuals, celebrating different feasts as devotions.  If one could step back and view the celebrations of different feast within the Church from a distance, one would see a large tapestry of devotion to God, of many various colors and textures.  What I hope to do each year is take different small feasts and highlight them in some way.  The purpose is not to make a small feast into a major one, but to suggest different ways you might enhance your devotional life.  You might find that a certain devotion or prayer particularly appeals to you, and you might make it your own.

The Feast of Our Lady of the Rosary comes on 7 October, which is Tuesday of next week.  To celebrate it, I thought we could pray the different official mysteries throughout the day.  After the 8:00 a.m. Mass I will lead the Sorrowful Mysteries.  The school children will lead us in the Joyful Mysteries at 11:00 a.m. and in the Glorious Mysteries at 2:45 p.m.   Finally, the regular rosary group will lead us in the Luminous Mysteries at 7:00 p.m.   All rosaries will be prayed in the church.  Every devotion is not for everyone, but I invite you to participate in some or all of our observance of this feast.  Let us continue to deepen our prayer life, both individually and as a parish.

OUR DEEPEST SYMPATHY    is extended to the family and friends of Andrew Gall who passed away last week.  Please remember him and his family in your prayers.

WELCOME BREAKFAST    sponsored by the Social Life Committee, will be held today, Sunday, September 28th after the 9:00 a.m. mass.  Everyone is invited to stop by McCrystal Hall to meet and welcome the newest members of our parish.

MARKET DAY    Are you still filling up your freezer after the blackout?  Order from Market Day this week, and help your parish and school in the process.  The website - www.marketday.com - allows you to order and pay online, or pay when you pick up your order, using code #7756 to indicate St. Catherine.  The order blank can also be filled out and dropped off at the school office before Friday morning.  Delivery date is Thursday, Oct. 2, from 5:30-6:30 at McCrystal Hall and staffed by our seventh and eighth grade families.  Last month we made $300 and are donating a tenth of that to the St. Augustine Food pantry in Covington .  Any questions or problems, please call Matt Connolly at 750-2385.

PARISH EMAIL LIST   We are in the process of compiling a parish email list that will be used on a semi-regular basis to keep parishioners informed of upcoming activities and events.  If you have not provided the parish office with your email address, or if it has recently changed, please email Carol Adams at caroladams@stcatherineofsiena.org with your address.  Also, if you do not wish to be included on these emails, please notify Carol.
