LENTEN FASTING AND ABSTINENCE
Now that Lent has begun, the diocese would like us to refresh our
memories about the Church’s expectations regarding Lenten fasting and
abstinence.
Fasting requires a Catholic from the 18th to the 59th birthday to reduce the amount of food eaten from normal. The Church defines this as one meal a day, and two smaller meals which if added together would not exceed the main meal in quantity. Such fasting is obligatory on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday.
Abstinence requires a Catholic 14 years of age until death to abstain from eating meat on Fridays in honor of the Passion of Jesus on Good Friday. On the Fridays outside of Lent Catholics in the US may substitute a penitential or even a charitable practice of their own choosing.
The other traditional Lenten practice is prayer. Although there is no church regulation regarding it, it is a good practice to pick a new or additional way of praying during Lent.
I will be praying for you in
a special way this Lent as we journey towards the celebration of Easter.
Fr. Stef
OUR DEEPEST SYMPATHY goes out to the family and friends of Ruth Wimmer who was buried from our parish. May God’s perpetual light shine upon her.
WE
WELCOME to our parish
family through baptism, Ava Marie Traylor, daughter of Guy and Gina.
May she always know God’s blessing.
PLEASE
NOTE The parish office
will be closed on Monday, February 18th.
ST. CATHERINE SIENA CLUB
will be meeting this Sunday, February 17th
at 1:00 p.m. in McCrystal Hall. For
all written correspondence concerning the Siena club, please call Ruth at
441-0985.
ROSARY PRAYER GROUP
will be meeting on Tuesday evenings at 7:00 pm during Lent.
LENTEN
SCRIPTURE STUDY will be
held immediately following all Wednesday masses during Lent. This
can be a great opportunity to more fully experience this holy season.
STATIONS
OF THE CROSS Continue your Lenten journey by attending Stations of the
Cross every Friday
at 7:00 pm.
What a great way to recount Jesus’ journey to Calvary for our salvation.
This would be a perfect opportunity for family prayer during Lent.
You
may have heard that the Value City store in Latonia will be closing soon,
probably within a month or two. We
still have some gift cards in stock, so if you are planning on getting some
store-closing bargains, be sure to pick up your scrip gift cards before you
shop!
LOVE BOAT 08' THANK YOU
The School PTO would like to express our sincere thanks to Shannon
Desmond Walz and Ellen Wira for co-chairing Love Boat '08.
Once again, it was another huge success! Shannon and Ellen have
co-chaired Love Boat for the past 3 years and we truly appreciate all of their
dedication, hard work and enthusiasm. They have worked year-round to make
this such a great event which benefits our entire parish. Thanks also, to
all committee chairpersons, workers, those who came to the event and all
parishioners, friends and relatives who helped and supported this event in any
way. We look forward to setting sail once again for Love Boat '09!
THE HEARTFUL QUILTERS met for the first time on Monday, January 21 and we had 7
ladies join us for our first gathering. While some knitted, others worked
together to create a baby quilt. One ambitious lady even took home supplies to
make another quilt by next month! Some of the ladies who helped are not sewers
but we had jobs for them also! Please join us and we can find a job for you! We
will be meeting in McCrystal Hall on the 3rd Monday of each month (February
18th). Bring supplies if you have them or use some of ours, just
come and join the fun! If you do not drive at night, but would like to
come, please contact Betsy at 441-3463 or Pat at 781-2711 for a ride.
HELP HOMELESS FAMILIES through the Interfaith Hospitality Network (IHN) Monday-Wednesday, March 3, 4 and 5. Assistance is needed in transporting families in the IHN van to and from Christ Church and the Day Center in Newport, preparing a meal, hosting a meal and spending the night. This is a great way for families and individuals to work together in service. New volunteers will be paired with experienced helpers so don’t let inexperience keep you from answering the call. Call Lisa Walburg at 441-4964 for additional information or see the sign-up posters at the Rossford Avenue exit of church. Thank you to Jim and Bev Stegman who have helped with set-up for IHN at Christ Church for every rotation since St. Catherine became a support church many years ago. Their hard work has been greatly appreciated by the volunteers at both churches and by the countless homeless families they have served. Jim and Bev helped set-up guest rooms on the Sunday before our rotation and we will need to provide that service with new volunteers starting this next rotation. If you are interested in helping with the set-up on March 2nd at Christ Church for about 1 hour please call Lisa Walburg.
