EASTER INVITATIONS
I want to present two invitations to you regarding next week. The first is an invitation to the Chrism Mass. This is the Mass at which all the oils we will use throughout the year are blessed, but it is called the Chrism Mass because one of those oils is our most sacred oil, the Sacred Chrism. This is olive oil into which perfume is mixed, and is consecrated at this Mass. It is used to anoint at baptisms and confirmations.
Since all the parishes receive their oils at this Mass, it has become the one Mass in the year when all the Catholic parishes of the diocese come together physically, by way of official and unofficial representatives, to celebrate the sacred mysteries of Christ's paschal sacrifice. The procession to receive the oils is something to see: all the banners remind one that we are not alone in our walk, that we belong to something larger than ourselves.
The second invitation is truly to enter into Holy Week. This is the holiest time of the year for us, the apex, the apogee, of the liturgical year. This is our Passover week. I know it sounds idealistic, but any efforts you make to clear out your week, empty your schedule, slow down your life and spend extra time in prayer and reflection and spiritual reading will be rewarded. Especially, please clear your life - even take off work if you can - so that we can join together for the Sacred Triduum. Even though it extends for three days, it is really one service - Holy Thursday, Good Friday, and then the Easter Vigil on Holy Saturday. Then - you wouldn't pass up dessert after a fine meal- crown it all by Mass on that blessed day, Easter Sunday. As the Catechism teaches, "Easter is not simply one feast among others, but the 'Feast of feasts', the 'Solemnity of solemnities . . .' St. Athanasius calls Easter 'the Great Sunday . . '.- The mystery of the Resurrection, in which Christ crushed death, permeates with its powerful energy our old time, until all is subjected to him."
See you there.
Fr. Stef
