Take a look at our new school garden and outdoor classroom. Thanks to a couple of grants by Mr. Schlachter, we were able to purchase a grow lab for the fifth grade classroom and materials to build our new garden and outdoor classroom. The 5th graders are growing vegetables from seed in the grow lab. They are learning about what it takes for plants to grow. Each day they monitor growth along with how much water is needed. When the plants are ready to go into the garden, they will transplant them in the new raised beds. Over the next several months, students will work in the garden as the plants grow. Over the summer, vegetables that are harvested, will be taken to the local food pantries for the poor.
In addition to the garden, the 8th graders are also working on building an outdoor classroom. It will contain a place for picnic tables and a lot of different plants. Mrs. West and Mr. Schlachter are working together to get plants that are native to this area and will be making several different sections within the garden, one of which will be a butterfly garden.
A lot of work has gone into the garden including over 150 hours of service by our junior high students. Special thanks to Mr. Schlachter for getting the grants and to Mrs. West for her help in selecting and planting the many cool plants.
